Head & Neck Soft Tissues, Carotid Arteries, Breast, Retroperitoneum, Scrotum, Upper/Lower Extremities (Vascular & Non-Vascular), Infant Hips, Amniocentesis Guidance
PREP:
- No prep necessary.
- Arrive 20 minutes before your appointment time to complete registration.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
- You may be asked to change into a gown, depending upon the body area being examined.
- You will lie upon a special ultrasound table.
- A conducting gel will be spread over the body area being examined.
- The sonographer will move a wand-like instrument (transducer) over the gel, creating images & saving the most relevant images.
- The sonographer may check the images with a radiologist before prior to you leaving.
- The exam is completely painless.
- Total estimated time of procedure: varies with type of procedure but usually 30-45 minutes.
Abdomen (Complete or Limited, including Liver), Abdominal Aorta
PREP:
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
- Arrive 20 minutes before your appointment time to complete registration.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
- You will change into a gown.
- You will lie on the ultrasound table.
- A conducting gel will be spread upon the skin of your abdomen.
- The sonographer will move a wand-like instrument (transducer) over the gel, creating & saving the most relevant images.
- The sonographer will check the images with a radiologist prior to your leaving.
- The exam is completely painless.
- Total estimated time of procedure: 30 minutes.
Limited Abdomen: Gallbladder, Common Bile Duct, Pancreas
PREP:
- Fat-free supper the night before the exam.
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
- Arrive 20 minutes before appointment time to complete registration.

- You will lie on the ultrasound table.
- A conducting gel will be spread over the skin of your abdomen.
- The sonographer will move a wand-like instrument (transducer) over the gel, creating & saving the most relevant images.
- The sonographer will check the images with a radiologist prior to your leaving.
- The exam is completely painless.
- Total estimated time of procedure: 30 minutes.
Non-OB Pelvis
PREP:
- Drink 32 ounces of fluid within one hour prior to the exam and do not urinate.
- Arrive 20 minutes before appointment time to complete registration.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
- You will be asked to change into a gown.
- You will lie on the ultrasound table.
- A conducting gel will be spread on the skin of your pelvic area.
- The sonographer will move a wand-like instrument (transducer) over the gel, creating & saving the most relevant images.
- The sonographer will check the images with a radiologist prior to you leaving. Once the images' quality has been assured, you will be allowed to void.
- The exam is completely painless although you may experience some discomfort from the full bladder.
- Total estimated time of procedure: 30 minutes.
OB Pelvis
PREP:
- If you are in your first 35 weeks of pregnancy: drink 32 ounces of fluid one hour prior to the exam and do not urinate.
- If you are 35+ weeks pregnant: drink 24 ounces of fluid one hour prior to the exam and do not urinate.
- Arrive 20 minutes before appointment time to complete registration.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
- You spouse or other family members will be allowed to be present during the procedure, with your permission.
- You will be asked to change into a gown.
- You will lie on an ultrasound table.
- A conducting gel will be spread on the skin of your pelvic area.
- The sonographer will move a wand-like instrument (transducer) over the gel, creating & saving the most relevant images.
